April 2026 Mission
April Mission Updates: Wednesday, April 22
Where I am: Tashkent, Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan Pastor/Leader Retreat
Today in a sentence:
A full and meaningful day – traveling to the retreat, reconnecting with pastors, and stepping once again into the sacred work of listening, encouraging, and teaching.
Oleg picked me up at the hotel at 9:00 a.m. for the hour-and-a-half drive to a secluded retreat location outside Tashkent.
Traffic in Tashkent is… an experience. I’m fairly certain the city could save a great deal of money by not painting lane designation stripes on their roads – no one seems to follow them anyway.
Oleg, however is an excellent driver. He has learned the rhythm of the road – when to weave, when to wait, when to gently insist with a well-timed honk – and, most importantly, how to avoid hitting anything.
When we arrived at the retreat location, I was warmly greeted by pastors and leaders that I’ve come to know over the last few years. Hugs, smiles, laughter – and even a few joyful tears – marked our reunion.
After a hot cup of chai, we began our first session.
“Slava”, led us in worship. He is a gifted musician who plays a guitar while using foot pedals and technology to create a rich, orchestral sound. It’s remarkable to watch – and even more meaningful to experience.
The Uzbek people love music, and it shows. Worship was energetic, sincere, and deeply heartfelt.
In between sessions, I spent time one-on-one with several pastors – listening to their stories and praying with them.
Despite the language barrier (and the fact that Helen – my interpreter – was often engaged with the women), our hearts connected deeply. With the help of a translation app and a willingness to be patient, we were able to communicate what mattered most.
These days are long and full – almost non-stop – but they are deeply energizing for me.
After the final session, we made the hour-and-a-half drive back to the city. I returned to the hotel tired, but grateful – and ready to rest before returning again tomorrow.
Prayer/Reflection
Lord, thank You for the gift of these moments – for conversations that cross language barriers, for hearts that are open, and for the quiet work You are doing in each life represented.
Strengthen these pastors and leaders. Give them endurance where they feeel weary, wisdom where they feel uncertain, and a renewed awareness of Your presence in their daily lives.
Help me to listen well, speak faithfully, and serve with humility in each interaction. – Amen
