Spiritual Formation
What Is Shaping Your Heart?
It happens – whether we realize it or not.
From the earliest moments of life to the end of our days, we are being shaped. Most of the time, this shaping is quiet – almost imperceptible. We may not have the language to describe it, and yet it is real – steadily, patiently, and powerfully forming who we are.
We are being formed.
Not someday. Not when life slows down. Not when – or if – we feel more “spiritual.” Even now, something is shaping our hearts, our thoughts, and our lives.
The apostle Paul recognized this truth – and its purpose:
“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”
– 2 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV)
Paul reminds us that this transformation is not random. It has a direction and a purpose. We are being shaped into the likeness – the image – of Christ.
And notice how this happens.
As we behold Him – when our attention turns toward Him, when we begin to see Him more clearly, when we walk with Him over time – something begins to change within us. Not all at once, but gradually, “from one degree of glory to another.”
This is important. Transformation is not something we manufacture. It “comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”
We are not left to change ourselves. God Himself is at work within us.
We Feel It… Even If We Can’t Name It
Many people today carry an inner heaviness. It shows up in different ways: a restless mind that never quite settles, a weariness that sleep does not fix, a quiet sense that something is off, or an unspoken question that lingers beneath the surface – Is there more than this?
Life can feel full, but not always meaningful. Busy, but not always grounded. Connected, but often lonely.
If you’ve felt that tension, you are not alone – and you are not broken. Something is shaping your inner life. The question is simply what – or whom?
Formation Is Already Happening
The word formation may sound unfamiliar, or even a bit abstract. But the idea itself is simple:
Formation is the process of being shaped over time.
Just as a river slowly shapes the land it flows through, and just as repeated habits shape the rhythm of our days, our hearts and lives are being shaped by what we consistently give our attention to.
The question is not, “Am I being formed?” The real question is not just what is forming me – but who.
What Is Shaping You – and Who is Behind it?
Pause for a moment and consider your everyday life.
What fills your attention? What influences your thinking? What shapes your reactions?
For many of us, the answer is not one thing, but many.
- The constant noise of news and media,
- the pace and pressure of responsibilities,
- the opinions of others,
- the quiet pull of comparison,
- and the habits we fall into without thinking.
None of these are neutral. Over time, they shape how we think, what we value, what we desire, and even how we respond to life.
But Scripture helps us see something deeper.
Behind the many influences shaping our lives, there are ultimately two directions at work – one that draws us toward the patterns of this world, and one that leads us toward the life of God.
The apostle Paul writes:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind…”
(Romans 12:2, ESV)
We are always moving in one direction or another – either being conformed to the patterns around us or being transformed into something new.
This Is Where Hope Begins
At first, this might feel a bit unsettling. But it is actually very good news. Because if we are being shaped, it means we are not stuck.
Change is possible. Growth is possible. Renewal is possible.
And this is where the message of Jesus becomes deeply personal. His invitation is not simply to believe something about Him, but to walk with Him – to know Him, and to be changed over time through a personal and growing relationship with Him.
The kind of change many of us long for does not come through trying harder. It comes through being shaped differently.
A Gentle Place to Begin
The good news is that you do not need to fix everything today. You do not need a complicated plan. You simply need to begin by paying attention.
Simple Practice
Sometime today, take a few quiet moments and ask:
- What has been shaping my thoughts lately?
- What has been influencing my emotions?
- What seems to be forming my reactions?
Don’t rush. Don’t judge. Just notice.
Reflect
What has been quietly shaping my heart – and is it leading me toward life?
Next Step
Identify one influence in your life right now – either something that is shaping you in a healthy way, or something that may be pulling you away from what is good and true. Simply naming it is a powerful first step.
Walking Forward Together
This week is not about changing everything. It is about seeing more clearly. Because once we begin to recognize what is shaping us, we are in a position to respond.
In the weeks ahead, we will explore what it means to be intentionally shaped – not by pressure or performance, but by a personal, growing relationship with Christ.
For now, begin here:
You are being formed. And that means your life is not fixed – it is being shaped.
